The final American troops have left Afghanistan. The war is over. The Taliban have officially won.

The war lasted almost my entire adult life. It began in 2001 after the United States accused the Taliban of harboring Osama Bin Laden who they said did the 9/11 attacks. When the Taliban asked them for evidence that Bin Laden did the attacks, they refused to provide any evidence and invaded the country.

What was originally sold to the American people as a mission to capture and kill Bin Laden, turned into a weird permanent military occupation and nation building exercise where victory was never defined. They said the occupation was meant to bring freedom and democracy to the Afghan people and that giving them freedom would help prevent the spread of terrorism. But at some point over the past ten years, this turned into an exercise of imposing feminism and gay poop sex on the Afghan people. Ultimately, the Taliban were more appealing to the Afghan people as most Afghans did not want to risk their lives defending a corrupt puppet government dedicated to these weird and unnatural causes.

The entire war was an enormous waste of time and resources. The humiliating and botched withdrawal we have seen over the past several weeks has been a fitting end to this insane situation.

History will look back on these events as a major catalyst for the decline of American hegemony around the world.
