The Israeli media is openly discussing the preparations for a ground assault on Rafah.

This operation has nothing to do with defeating Hamas. It is about killing as many defenseless people as possible. Many Palestinians fled to Rafah from the Jewish bombing campaigns and attacks.
This recent map of Gaza from Southfront shows that the Jews have failed to defeat Hamas despite bombing everything in Gaza to ruins. There is no real strategic military value in a mass invasion of Rafah. You would only do this if you were conducting a campaign of genocide which is exactly what the Jews are doing.
