President Trump just proposed a compromise that is basically the wall funding in exchange for a three year DACA extension. Mitch McConnell is going to bring up the compromise bill for a vote in the Senate next week.

Ann Coulter has been on Twitter calling the proposal amnesty.

I do understand her frustration. On the surface it is not a terribly appealing proposal but it isn’t full fledged amnesty as she’s characterizing it. It’s only a three year extension for DACA. It’s not like he’s proposing giving the DACA population permanent citizenship.

But I think this is political gamesmanship more than anything else. Trump is proposing something that many would consider a reasonable compromise. But it is safe to assume that the Democrats are going to reject it because of how unreasonable their leadership is.

If they actually accept his proposal, Trump gets his wall funding and DACA is only extended for three years. If they reject it, Trump can point to how unreasonable the Democrats are and it will only give him more justification to build the wall unilaterally through a national emergency declaration.

I think he already knows the Democrats are not going to accept the proposal. All one has to do is look at some of the insane comments posted on Twitter.

Nancy has apparently already rejected the proposal.

So it looks like this is going to drag on a little longer. We’ll see the compromise bill brought up for a vote in the Senate but no matter what happens there, it looks like no action will be taken by the House. Unless of course the Democrat rank and file raise a fuss but when was the last time we’ve Democrats go against their leadership? I can’t remember a single major case of them doing this.

If I were Trump, I’d wait till the next Central American caravan arrives and declare the national emergency when the insanity starts.
