A few days back Elon Musk made the decision to limit the number of tweets someone could read to eliminate data scraping.
To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits:
– Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day
– Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day
– New unverified accounts to 300/day— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 1, 2023
Some have speculated that this was done to prevent AI apps like ChatGPT from consuming Twitter’s user data. This may or may not be true, but limiting the number of tweets people can read is a ridiculous policy and made the site unusable. In a previous article, I said this policy was like using a flamethrower to deal with a cockroach problem inside of a house.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, a variety of trending topics are now littered with all sorts of weird spam messages. Presumably these spam messages count towards the number of tweets you are allowed to read.
When I clicked on the trending topic #FranceRiots, this spam message was the very top message that came back. This was followed by other similar types of spam posts.
Searching for the term “Israel” results in all sorts of weird spam posts with Mandarin in them.
Two of the biggest stories in the world right now are the events happening in France and Israel. Yet if you search for posts on some of these topics you are presented with lots of garbage spam. This is just unacceptable. I don’t recall Twitter having these types of problems with before, so why are these things happening now?
I honestly don’t know what the hell Elon is doing. But between the continued censorship, the view limits and now this spam nonsense, the site has become a raging dumpster fire.
