The Saudis have recently informed the United States that normalization talks with Israel have been suspended.

With the Israelis planning to carpet bomb the Gaza Strip and presumably follow that up with a ground invasion, it is obviously impossible for the Saudis to continue with such negotiations. Their people simply won’t support it.

If the Israelis go too hard on Gaza, which they probably will, the entire Islamic world could potentially turn against them. The one thing that has kept Israel around has been their ability to stir up wars and strife between different Islamic countries.

Their relationship with Egypt is of particular interest. Egypt’s leader al-Sisi has cooperated with the West and Israel largely because they aided his rise to power in a military coup. He has also regularly collaborated with Israel and has blocked Palestinians from entering Egypt from Gaza.

The Egyptians have never supported normalization ties with Israel and the Israelis have been doing a number of things that have made al-Sisi’s political stance difficult to justify. We also just saw the story of that Egyptian cop killing Israeli tourists which is somewhat telling of how the people there really feel about Israel.

The point being is that the Israelis could be painting themselves into a corner. They are surrounded by lots of enemies and have few friends.
