Something is going to have to give. It is a totally unsustainable situation. Germany won’t be able to continue supporting the war in the Ukraine as its entire economy implodes.
The crazy thing is that Germany’s leader Olaf Scholz said just a few months ago that he was planning on building a huge army. Presumably this army would be built to challenge Russia. But how do you build a modern army when your economy is in a depression and your industrial base destroyed?
It is hard to see how this blind support of the Ukraine is going to continue once we get into the winter months. Germany is going to have no choice but to try and renormalize relations with Russia.
