Elon Musk said this about freedom of speech yesterday.

He’s basically saying that there will be freedom of speech on Twitter but that if you post a tweet that says “nigger” or whatever in it, the post will get buried. Of course, that’s not exactly freedom of speech. At the very least it is a very strange way to qualify it.

With that said, this policy is an improvement over what we have had under the previous regime. It is hardly ideal though. The platform should be totally neutral and posts should be spread organically. There should be no artificial algorithm burials if a post has any type of particular content like the “nigger” word. It’s also not clear what he means by a “hate tweet.” Who defines what a “hate tweet” is? There needs to be clarification on what this actually means. I mean, I should be able to say “The Jews” and not have my tweet get buried.

I get that he’s got Jews and the Anti-Defamation League up his ass and there’s probably issues with advertisers, app store stuff etc.. but I don’t agree with burying tweets like this. It’s just a moderate step up from the censorship shit show we’ve been enduring for the past several years. There’s other options like setting up something similar to parental controls that individuals could enable if they can’t deal with seeing a tweet that says “nigger” in it.

He also said that a decision was made to restore a few accounts including the Babylon Bee and Jordan Peterson.

Additionally, he posted a poll asking if Donald Trump should be reinstated. The poll has been getting flooded by bots but a majority of people have favored Trump’s reinstatement.

The poll may have been a honeypot to attract bots, but that’s just a guess.

He was asked about Alex Jones and Musk said that he would not reinstate him.

Jones was one of the people on the ADL’s list who they specifically demanded not be reinstated.

Jones responded by saying that he understands why he can’t be reinstated immediately due to the things that Musk is dealing with.

I also do not agree with making individual reinstatement announcements like this. Same with doing polls asking about reinstating people like Trump.

There should be a general amnesty given to everybody who was banned under the previous regime. It’s ridiculous to publicly litigate individual reinstatement decisions like this. Plus, by saying that you won’t reinstate a specific person, you are effectively admitting that you aren’t really supporting freedom of speech.

He previously said that they would have some sort of content moderation council and there’s no word on if this council played a role in these decisions.

While I do think Musk is pushing Twitter in the right direction, there are still lots of questions about how much freedom of speech there will be on the site. Ultimately, I just want to be able to talk about my problems with the Jews. I don’t need to be able to say “nigger” or other racial slurs.

My old account is still banned. It should be reinstated as should everybody else who has been banned.
