Despite billions of dollars in resources at their disposal Facebook, Instagram and other related services went offline earlier today.

Daily Mail:

Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp users are in a frenzy after many attempted to log in today only to find that the sites were down.

The outage appears to have affected users around the world, with thousands of reports within the first hour.

Users took to Twitter to express their grief about the issue, which seems to have crashed both the mobile application and the desktop versions of the Facebook-owned sites.

According to Down Detector, the outages appear to have started around 4:48 p.m. (ET).

A live outage map shows hotspots in the northeastern region of the US, as well as some parts of Europe.

Parts of South America, the Philippines and India also seem to have been hit.

Users reported having issues logging into the service, posting comments and viewing photos.

This problem could have most certainly been avoided if Facebook had only hired more Indian systems and network engineers. Everybody knows that women and Indians are the best at this sort of thing.

All that aside, it’d actually be a blessing if these sites went down permanently. It’s not like free discourse exists on these sites. And if these monopolistic thought policed sites can’t be accessed as public utilities, than what’s the point of them?
